Kenya Moves to Set Up Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit After NYPD Talks

Kenyan officials are working on plans for a new Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, with lessons drawn from the New York Police Department (NYPD).

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, the unit is a strategic response to Nairobi’s evolving security challenges as the city grows into one of Africa’s fastest-expanding metropolitan centres.

The unit is meant to bolster security, maintain public order, combat emerging criminal threats, and improve safety in Nairobi and its satellite towns.

Murkomen led a delegation of senior government officials who met NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch in New York.

Murkomen led a delegation of senior government officials who met NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch in New York to explore a memorandum of understanding between the National Police Service and the NYPD.

The talks, the CS said, focused on intelligence-led and community-oriented policing, technology integration, specialised urban operations, emergency response coordination, and crime prevention.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Kenya’s Ambassador to the US David Kerich, and Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat were part of the meeting.

Kenya is hoping to learn from NYPD in planned establishment of Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit.

In our benchmarking visit, we are seeking insights into intelligence-led and community-oriented policing, technology integration, specialised urban operations, emergency response coordination, and crime prevention strategies, among other areas of interest,” Murkomen said.

Nairobi’s population and urban sprawl have increased pressure on policing, with officials citing complex threats that require specialised and coordinated responses. The new unit is positioned as the structural intervention to address that gap,” he added.
