Kenya Screens Over 80,000 Travellers for Ebola as Regional Outbreak Triggers Heightened Response

Kenya has screened more than 80,000 travellers for Ebola Virus Disease at entry points and tested 56 suspected cases, all negative.

This is even as the country ramps up preparedness amid a Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda.

In a press statement dated June 5, 2026, the Ministry of Health confirmed Kenya’s risk status and the scale of its surveillance operations.

Given Kenya’s close regional connectivity through trade, transport, and population movement, the country remains at an elevated risk of disease importation,” Health CS Aden Duale said.

Duale also reassured that “as of 5 June 2026, Kenya has not reported any confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease.”

Ebola acreening and testing data

The Ministry reported that more than 80,000 travellers have been screened for Ebola Virus Disease through various Points of Entry, including 3,969 travellers within the last 24 hours alone.

A total of fifty-six (56) samples collected from alerts involving individuals with recent travel history to the DRC and Uganda have been tested, and all results have been negative,” CS Duale said in the statement.

The Ministry has already identified 25 high-risk counties, placed 347 rapid response personnel on standby, and sensitized more than 1,759 national and county healthcare workers on Ebola preparedness and response.

It also added that simulation exercises are ongoing to test Kenya’s capacity to detect and respond to outbreaks promptly and effectively.
