The Senate has invited Kenyans to submit views on a new law that seeks to criminalize manipulation of sports competitions.
In a public notice issued by the Clerk of the Senate, J.M. Nyegenye, the Standing Committee on Labour and Social Welfare has called for written memoranda and announced a public hearing on The Sports (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (National Assembly Bills No. 5 of 2026).
According to the notice, the Bill was read for the First Time in the Senate on Wednesday, 9th September, 2026, and thereafter committed to the Labour and Social Welfare Committee for consideration.
The Committee is required under Standing Order 145(5) of the Senate Standing Orders to facilitate public participation and to take into account the views and recommendations of the public when it makes its report to the Senate.
What the Sports (Amendment) Bill seeks to do
The Bill seeks to establish a framework for investigating and criminalizing the manipulation of sports competitions, with corresponding criminal penalties and disciplinary sanctions.
If passed, the law would provide a legal basis to deal with vices such as match-fixing and other forms of competition manipulation in Kenyan sports.
“In accordance with Article 118 of the Constitution, the Committee now invites interested members of the public to submit representations by way of written memoranda,” read part of the notice.
The memoranda, notice said, may be submitted to the Clerk of the Senate via post office, hand-delivered to the Office of the Clerk of the Senate again the main Parliament Buildings in Nairobi, or emailed to clerk.senate@parliament.go.ke and copied to laboursocialwelfarecomm.senate@parliament.go.ke.
The deadline for submissions is Monday, 28th September, 2026 at 5.00 p.m.
In addition, the Committee will hold a public hearing on the Bill on Tuesday, 29th September, 2026 at 11.00 a.m. at the Mini Chamber, First Floor, County Hall, Parliament Buildings, Nairobi. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
