As part of the Government’s far-reaching education reforms under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), work is underway to establish at least one public university in every county.

This investment, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo says, reaffirms the conviction that advancing the conversation on Kenya Beyond Vision 2030 will require an objective, visionary and well-educated population.

In Baringo County, that ambition is taking shape through the construction of Kabarnet University College, the county’s first public university.

Groundbreaking for the institution was held in April 2026, with the flagship college set to operate as a constituent college of Moi University.

The project is being implemented under the direct oversight of the Ministry of Defence and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), providing focused project management, timely execution and financial accountability.

“Site clearance is complete, with construction teams now undertaking deep foundation works,” PS Omollo said.

The first phase is establishing the core campus infrastructure, including modern tuition and science facilities, a library, auditorium, administration block and a 1,000-bed student hostel.

The M-PESA Foundation is also supporting the project through the renovation and full outfitting of two computer laboratories.

While construction continues, the university has already commenced operations from temporary facilities at Moi Teachers Training College in Seretunin, under the mentorship of Moi University.

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has accredited three initial degree programmes; Bachelor of Education (Science), Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, and Bachelor of Science in Travel and Tours Management.

PS Omollo noted that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration recognises education as a long-term pathway to peace, stability and opportunity.

“By equipping young people with skills and opening pathways to employment and enterprise, such investments help address drivers of conflict while strengthening a secure and prosperous society,” he said.
