Residents and traders of Maili Saba trading centre in Sitatunga ward, Trans Nzoia County have decried rising incidences of insecurity especially at night.
In the recent incident, three youths were Wednesday night stabbed by an armed gang. In the attack, one youth, Allan Moseti succumbed to stabbing injuries and was laid to rest on Friday. The other two are recuperating.
The incident happened less than 100 metres from Maili Saba Police Post.
Addressing the media, the angry residents and traders blamed the police of laxity in responding to their distress calls.
Mary Wanjiru Kuria, the mother of one of the youths said it was heartbreaking that police officers have abandoned their mandate of protecting people’s lives and properties.
“My son is in pain. He was stabbed with a soldiers knife that left him with serious injuries. I’m saddened that although we have police officers around, they don’t protect us,” Kuria said.
Police laxity: Calls for transfers
Evans Munandi, a trader in the trading centre said the late Moseti could not have to died had the police discharged their duties as required.
Area Member of County Assembly Simon Murei called for immediate transfer of all police officers attached to Maili Saba Police Post.
“I have heard that they (police) said they could not respond because Kwanza is their area of jurisdiction and could not cross over to Cherang’any. But we know police serve all without boundaries and I am asking the Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome to transfer these lazy officers,” Murei appealed.
He also called for speedy investigations so that the culprits can be arrested and charged so that they can serve as an example to others.
The MCA further stated that he will set aside funds in the next financial year for security lights installation in the fast growing trading center to help curb insecurity.
