Simat/Kapseret Member of County Assembly Moses Kebenei has issued a notice of motion that if passed will see a sports training centre set up in the ward.
In a notice of motion seen by Uasin Gishu News, the MCA argues that Kapseret has the best climate for training in athletics making it a perfect area for such a facility to be set up.
Kebenei further notes that the entire Kapseret Sub County has no training facility despite being home to two gold medals – one from Olympics and the other from the World Championship.
Kaptinga-born Asbel Kiprop won the 1500m title during the 2008 Beijing Olympics while the late Nicholas Bett bagged the first-ever gold in men’s 400m hurdles at the world championships in Beijing. They are both from the ward.

Bett clocked a world-leading time of 47.79 seconds.
Best climate for training
“Aware that Uasin Gishu County is the city of champions whuch has produced celebrated world class athletes; further aware that, Eldoret and by extension Simat/Kapseret ward boasts of two gold medals in athletics…” read part of the notice of motion dated April 11, 2023.
“Kapseret has the best climate for training in athletics and other sport disciplies,” it added.
The MCA further noted the county already has some land near Kapset Forest that can be utilized for the setting up of the training centre.
He now wants funds set aside in the next financial year to facilitate the project.
“This County Assembly urges the County Government of Uasin Gishu through the department of Youth and Sports to consider setting aside funds in the next Financial Year to construct a sports taining centre in Simat/Kapseret wrd, that will attract not only local athletes but also international ones,” MCA Kebenei says in the motion’s prayer.

The motion is expected to be debabted by the Uasin Gishu County Assembly.
If approved by MCAs, it will then be forwarded to the County Executive for implementation.
Currently, the county government of Uasin Gishu is financing construction a Chagiaya High Altitude Training Centre in Kesses Sub County.
