Moi University among Beneficiaries of Ksh140 Billion British Council Grant

Efforts to help public universities get out of the financial challenges they have been facing recently received a shot in the arm.

This is after the British Council extended a Ksh140 billion grant towards six universities in the country.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula on March 3, 2023, announced the approval of the grant by the cabinet.

He said they will help cushion the said universities against underfunding.

Further, the grant, Wetangula said, will help the universities expand their programs.

Yesterday, his (President Ruto) cabinet passed and approved the tranch of donation from British Council of KES 140 billion that is going to be given to six institutions for expansion of academic facilities,” the National Assembly Speaker said.

He spoke during Kibabii University’s 7th graduation ceremony.

Moi University will rise again

It has since emerged that Moi University is among the six that will benefit from the grant.

The Kesses-based university in Uasin Gishu County has been facing financial challenges that have threatened to cripple its operations.

But according to Kesses Member of Parliament CPA Julius Ruto, the grant is a first step in reviving the one giant public university.

I am glad to report that; The government has announced a KES 140 billion grants from the British Council to cushion the six universities in the country amongst them Moi University from underfunding,” he added.

The legislator also expressed optimism that Moi University will one day rise.

Moi University was established in 1984 by an Act of Parliament (Moi University Act, 1984) as the second public university in Kenya.

Aside from Moi University, others that will benefit from the Ksh140 billion British Council grant are Kibabii, Jomo Kenyatta, Kenyatta, and the University of Nairobi.
