After over two months of closure, learning at Moi University are set to resume later this week.
According to Higher Education Principal Secretary Dr Beatrice Inyangala, the Eldoret-based university will reopen on Friday, November 8, 2024.
Prior to learning resuming, a series of activities have been lined up to address issues that have occasionally disrupted operations at the institution that has three other campuses.
Over the weekend, Moi University management held a consultative meeting with officials from the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) who are on strike.
The meeting continues on Monday.
On Tuesday, the two parties are expected to start negotiations expected to the signing of the Return to Work Formular between the management and officials from UASU and KUSU on Wednesday.
The PS said the university will reopen on Thursday with learners expexted to report back to work on Friday.
“MOI University Reopens! This is the schedule of activities leading to the reopening of Moi University,” Dr Inyangala shared a detailed document for events this week.
“The State Department for Higher Education and Research will be at Moi University on Friday, November 8, 2024 to welcome the students back to the University. Comrades Resilience,” she added.
Why are Moi University lecturers on strike?
Teaching and non-teaching staff at the institution are demanding for payment of their salary arrears running into billions of shillings.
They have also accused the institution of failing to remit statutory deductions.
A source told Uasin Gishu News that the government is willing to rescue the university but funds available are less than a quarter of what the staff want paid.
It remains to be seen if the UASU and KUSU officials will agree to the government’s offer.
