Construction of a modern maternity wing at Moi’s Bridge Health Centre in Uasin Gishu County is set to begin following the official handover of the project site to a contractor.
The project is funded by the Safaricom Foundation.
The handover ceremony was presided over by the County Director of Preventive and Promotive Services, Laban Kiprop.
Kiprop said the project is expected to be completed within 10 months and two weeks, at an estimated cost of KSh 65 million, excluding the cost of equipping the facility.

The proposed maternity wing will significantly expand the hospital’s capacity and improve maternal and newborn healthcare services in the region.
Once complete, the facility will have a modern theatre, a Newborn Unit (NBU), inpatient wards, a kitchen, an ultrasound room, and other essential support services.
It will accommodate approximately 50 beds. Additional infrastructure will include a standby generator, a septic system, and covered walkways to enhance accessibility and service delivery.
Uasin Gishu-University of Eldoret 10-year deal
Meanwhile, the County Government of Uasin Gishu and the University of Eldoret are set to sign a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding to deepen collaboration in research, training, and community development across the county.
The MOU will establish a formal framework for the two institutions to work together on projects touching agriculture, health, engineering, environment, education, and youth empowerment.
Both parties described it as a step toward sustainable development and efficient use of public resources.
Speaking during the pre-signing meeting, Uasin Gishu County Attorney, Silverster K.Metto, said the partnership will leverage the University of Eldoret’s academic and technical expertise alongside the county government’s policy and implementation mandate. The goal, they noted, is to avoid duplication and ensure that research directly addresses community needs.

According to the agreement, the collaboration will cover at least 20 thematic areas. Key priorities include food security through livestock and fisheries development, value addition, and post-harvest management. In health, the focus will be on maternal and child care, sports medicine, and joint research initiatives.
