The County Government of Trans Nzoia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting students’ welfare and talent development after donating sports jerseys and dignity towels to members of the University of Eldoret Students Association (TACUESA) from Trans Nzoia County.
The items, donated by Governor George Natembeya, are aimed at enhancing students’ welfare and promoting sports activities the students.
Speaking on Thursday while presenting the items on behalf of the Governor, County Secretary Truphosa Amere challenged the students to develop a sustainable business idea that the county government could support to strengthen their welfare programmes and create a lasting impact at the university.
She assured the students that once they develop a viable business proposal, the county would provide capacity building support to help them implement the initiative.
“We want you to think beyond your time at the university. Come up with a sustainable business idea that can improve the welfare of students. Once you have a well developed proposal, the county government will support you through capacity building to help make it a success,” said Amere.
Do counties provide bursaries to university students?
Responding to the students’ appeal for bursary support, Amere clarified that county education funds are currently allocated to Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) programmes, while bursaries fall under the mandate of the national government.
County Executive Committee Member for Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture and Tourism Eliud Tormoi encouraged the students to remain focused on their studies while embracing leadership and innovation.
“You are ambassadors of Trans Nzoia County wherever you go. Work hard, remain visionary and carry yourselves with respect and dignity because you represent the image of our county. Develop practical business ideas and the county government will explore ways of helping you actualize them,” said Tormoi.
Chief Youth Development Officer John Etori advised the students to engage county youth officers when developing their proposals to ensure they meet the requirements for support.
“Take time to discuss and refine your business proposal with our youth officers before presenting it. This will strengthen your proposal and increase its chances of receiving support,” he said.
What Trans Nzoia UoE students promised Natembeya
The University of Eldoret Students Association (TACUESA) Chairperson, Ndiema Silvena, accompanied by other association officials, expressed gratitude to Governor Natembeya for the donation, saying the jerseys would greatly motivate the students as they nurture sporting talent.
“We sincerely thank Governor George Natembeya for standing with students from Trans Nzoia. The jerseys will boost our sports teams as we continue nurturing talent while the dignity towels will go a long way in supporting the welfare of our members. We are committed to working closely with the county government for the benefit of students,” said Silvena.
The association, which has more than 500 members, also presented its requests and concerns to the County Secretary, including a plea for support towards its welfare programme to assist needy students.
The students reiterated their commitment to strengthening collaboration with the County Government of Trans Nzoia in advancing youth empowerment and development initiatives.
