The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) is among the winners of the recently tabled national budget estimates for the 2023/2024 financial year.
Treasury and National Planning Cabinet Secretary Prof Njuguna Ndung’u presented the budget estimate statement on Thursday.
In the budget, the CS proposed that Ksh12.8 billion be allocated to the Eldoret-based public health.
The allocation to the hospital is over a billion more than what the government allocated to it in the last financial year.
It had an allocation of Ksh11.7 billion.
MTRH is the second largest public hospital in Kenya after the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi.

It is also a Multi-Specialty National/International Teaching and Referral Hospital serving the Western half of Kenya (23 Counties), Eastern Uganda, Southern Sudan, Northern Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo amongst other areas.
The Hospital covers a population of over 25 million.
In addition, MTRH is the Teaching Hospital for Moi University College of Health Sciences that trains both Undergraduate Medical Students and several Master’s in Medicine Specialist programs with over 240 postgraduate students (Registrars) distributed across several programs.
Key 2023/24 budget allocations for health sector
Several other Medical Training Institutions also utilize MTRH in their Training programs.
Other key allocations for the health sector in the 2023/2024 budget include Ksh3.7 billion for the Kenya Covid-19 Emergency Response Project; Ksh4.1 billion for Free Maternity Health Care; Sh5.9 billion for Managed Equipment Services as well as Ksh 1.7 billion to provide medical cover for the elderly and severely disabled persons.
“I propose to the National Assembly to effect a budget allocation of Sh1.9 billion for the Construction of a Cancer Centre at Kisii Level 5 Hospital; Sh500 million for strengthening of Cancer Centre Management at Kenyatta National Hospital; and an additional Sh155.0 million is proposed for the establishment of Regional Cancer Centres,” read part of the budget statement.
