The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has announced the launch of its fourth regional office in Eldoret.
Opening of the office coincides with a two-day conference commemorating Data Privacy Day 2025.
Themed “Safeguarding Personal Data to Spur Digital Transformation & Economic Development,” the event highlights Kenya’s commitment to ensuring data privacy in an increasingly digital world.
The launch will be officiated by Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications, and Digital Economy William Kabogo.
Where are ODPC regional offices?
The new Eldoret office adds to existing offices in Mombasa, Nakuru, and Kisumu, with additional ODPC presence at Huduma Centres in Nyeri and Garissa to enhance accessibility.
Speaking during the first day of the conference on Monday, January 27, 2025, Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait emphasized the role of data privacy in Kenya’s technological growth.

“As our nation embraces rapid technological advancements, we must ensure that our progress aligns with a commitment to protecting personal data and fostering trust in the digital age. Today’s discussions are timely as they underscore the importance of digital transformation in driving economic development while safeguarding our citizens’ privacy,” Kassait said.
Since its operationalization in 2020 under the Data Protection Act 2019, the ODPC has made significant strides, including the registration of over 8,000 data controllers and processors. To date, the office has conducted 84 audits and inspections, resolved 6,516 complaints from the 6,817 received, and issued 195 determinations and 100 enforcement notices.
Additionally, 27 cases have been resolved through Alternative Dispute Resolution.
The ODPC has also developed eight sector-specific guidance notes targeting industries such as digital credit, communication, education, and health. These initiatives aim to streamline data processing and encourage compliance with privacy regulations.
Highlighting the media’s role in advancing data privacy awareness, the Data Commissioner praised journalists for their efforts since the enactment of the Data Protection Act, urging continued collaboration to foster responsible data management practices.
Kenyan journalists asked to promote accountability in data handling
Meanwhile, Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo underscored the need for journalists to understand the regulator’s expectations and promote accountability in data handling.
He called further for a concerted effort to address malpractices by data controllers and processors.
The Eldoret regional office will strengthen the ODPC’s capacity to oversee compliance and address data privacy concerns, bolstering Kenya’s leadership in digital transformation and privacy protection.
