The Trans Nzoia County Government, under the leadership of Governor Dr. George Natembeya, has launched a transformative initiative to distribute free maize seeds to over 200,000 vulnerable small-scale farmers.

This program, aimed at boosting food production across all 25 wards, was officially inaugurated at Tumaini in Sinyereri, Trans Nzoia East Sub County (Cherangany), on Monday, March 10, 2025.

Speaking at the event, Governor Natembeya emphasized that the initiative targets increasing maize acreage and addressing food shortages in the region, often referred to as Kenya’s food basket.

In addition, the Governor highlighted the importance of reducing reliance on imported cereals, stating that empowering local farmers is key to economic emancipation.

During the launch, the county boss also addressed infrastructure development, urging residents to collaborate with their ward representatives to prioritize road projects. He called for unity among leaders and residents, emphasizing the cosmopolitan nature of Trans Nzoia County.

County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Phanice Naliaka Khatundi, noted that the free seed distribution had already boosted maize production from 5 million bags to over 6 million bags in the previous year.

She further expressed optimism for even higher yields this year, urging farmers to prepare their farms for the upcoming planting season and to embrace crop diversification. The county is now promoting short-term crops like avocado, coffee, macadamia, tea, and bananas to provide farmers with quicker returns.

The launch event was attended by key county officials, including Deputy Speaker Obed Mwale Mahanga, Deputy County Secretary George Kisaka, and several other dignitaries.

This initiative also marks a significant step in addressing food security and empowering farmers in Trans Nzoia County ahead of the 2025 long-rain planting season.
