The National Police Service Boxing team popularly known as ‘Chafua Chafua’ is poised to retain its title as the country’s Boxing Champions.
This is after successfully leading in the scores standings in the just concluded 4th leg of the National Boxing Federation (NBF), held in Mbaraki, Mombasa County.
Police are comfortably leading after amassing 109 points against KDF’s 94, in the hotly contested bouts staged at Mbaraki Sports Club last weekend.
The police pugilists ran rings around the soldiers with middleweight Cosby Ouma dismissing Lawrence Okuta from the soldiers’ side with a barrage of left attacks, in an entertaining bout that ended 3-0 in favour of our boys.
The same fate befell Kelvin Maina in the flyweight category after David Karanja from Chafua Chafua punished his opponent for every mistake he made, silencing the soldiers’ guns amidst cheers from ecstatic crowds at the Mbaraki sports grounds.
But the perennial boxing rivalry between Police and KDF that dates back to the 1960s is set to be rekindled yet again, as pugilists from the two sides square it out for the top position in the finals to be staged in the lakeside town of Kisumu early next month.
Flyweight sensation Shaffie Bakari, Africa games heavyweight Bronze medalist, Elly Ajowi, and middleweight maestro Cosby Ouma, will be leading the police offensive against the soldiers.
Kept boxing alive
Chafua Chafua’s head Coach Chief Inspector David Munuhe, is upbeat that his boys who are also the Eastern Africa Police Boxing Champions will emerge victorious and bring home the title.
The competition between Police and KDF in the game has kept boxing alive in the country, with young men and women who have fallen in love with the sport opting to join either of the two services to fulfil their lifelong dreams.
The two teams have for over 50 years displayed a spirit of sportsmanship and their love for the game has seen boxing in the country withstand the test of times, as other sporting activities are faced with challenges.
