Principal Secretary for Defence Dr Patrick Mariru, on Thursday, June 11, 2026, conducted an inspection visit to the 64 Stadium in Eldoret, a Uasin Gishu County flagship sports infrastructure project managed by the City of Eldoret.
The 12,000-seater stadium is set to become a landmark facility that will nurture sporting talent, stimulate business activity, and strengthen Eldoret’s position as a leading sports and investment destination.
Eldoret City Manager, Elzeba Busienei, received the delegation on site as the inspection team toured the facility.
The PS announced that the stalled 64 Stadium project has now been handed over to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, with works expected to resume within the next two weeks and completion targeted within three months, in line with a directive by President William Ruto.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fast-tracking the project and ensuring its timely delivery to high standards, commending the strong collaboration between national and county governments in delivering transformative infrastructure.
Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea welcomed the renewed momentum, noting that the stadium will significantly boost sports development, create economic opportunities, and further strengthen Eldoret’s status as the City of Champions.
Director-General for Sports Timothy Kilimo noted that the facility will enhance Kenya’s capacity to host major continental tournaments while providing a modern platform for identifying and nurturing local talent.
