Register With SHIF to Receive Benefits From October, CS Barasa Tells Kenyans

Health Cabinet Secretary Dr Deborah Barasa has urged Kenyans to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to start receiving benefits from October 1st. This follows a public participation event held today the at the Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC).

The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Social Health Authority, held a National Validation Exercise for the Social Health Insurance Act Tariffs at the KICC Nairobi on Friday, August 30, 2024.

Speaking at the event, CS Barasa stressed the importance of improving healthcare accessibility and affordability.

She further noted that after several attempts, the country was now ready for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) take off.

She highlighted enhanced access to services including emergency care as well as improvement in tariffs for maternity services.

Meanwhile, Dr. Barasa announced increased tariffs for maternal health and emergency care, affirming the government’s commitment to equitable healthcare.

On his part, the health county executives caucus chairperson expressed the counties commitment in the rollout of the new reforms in how health is financed through SHA.

He also called for concerted efforts on public awareness, need to clear debts owed to public health facilities, ensure that the Means Testing Instrument does not face hiccups as has been witnessed with the University case and finally be deliberate in strengthening public health facilities.

The SHI Act features three key funds to boost preventive health, expand coverage, and protect against medical costs.
