Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has told the security apparatus in the county to remain nonpartisan ahead of the August 9 general election.
Mandago claims some of the security agencies have openly shown bias when handling various issues related to the ongoing political campaigns.
He singled out the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), for operating in a partisan way, in favour of candidates allied to the government side.
“All constitutional institutions supposed to be non-partisan must remain non-partisan. And I want to call out on the DCI. They are no longer doing their work, they are partisan,” Mandago told journalists.
“We’ve seen people issuing inflammatory statements, and because they are of a particular coalition, no action is taken,” he added.
Even though the governor did not mention politicians he claims were making inflammatory statements, his deputy, Daniel Chemno, had a few weeks ago claimed the DCI had ignored their calls to have Uasin Gishu independent gubernatorial candidate Bundotich Zedekiah Kiprop alias Buzeki questioned over inciting utterances.
Chemno in a media briefing at the County Headquarters in Eldoret town said several reports had been made over the candidate but no action has been taken against him.
And even as the leaders lament over the DCI inaction, Mandago also hit out at the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Stephen Kihara, whom he accused of engaging in Azimio politics.
The county boss, who is also the Uasin Gishu Senate candidate on a UDA ticket claimed the County Commissioner was holding meetings with the chiefs, forcing them to help popularize the Azimio coalition in the county.
“Mr Kihara, stop that business. Take charge of security matters and leave politics to us and the people. If you want to be in politics, leave the uniform and seek an elective seat even here in Uasin Gishu,” Mandago said.
“This thing of calling meetings telling chiefs they must help Azimio should stop,” he added, while also accusing the county security boss of holding night meetings.
The County Commissioner could not be reached for a comment on the allegations.
He was earlier in the week in Nakuru for a security meeting and returned back to a busy schedule of preparations to receive President Uhuru Kenyatta who was in Eldoret town for the Kenya Defense Forces recruits passing-out parade at Moi Barracks on Friday, July 1, 2022.
