Trans Nzoia: 27 Families Stranded In Floods Evacuated

Kenya Red Cross in collaboration with the County government of Trans Nzoia and the National government have evacuated 27 families that were stranded in floods.

Kenya Red Cross Trans Nzoia County branch chairperson Ronald Masindano told Uasin Gishu News the 27 families are drawn from the Namandala and Mukuyuni areas.

The families were evacuated and taken to Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital and Mukuyuni Health Facility for treatment and safety.

We have done our assessment and established that water levels have gone up posing a serious threat to our people. So far we have evacuated members of 27 families who were affected by floods,” Masindano said.

He also revealed that at least six dams in Trans Nzoia have been identified as very high-risk levels and called on people living in riparian lands to move out.

We have Wamuini, Baharini and Lumuli dams in Kiminini, Motosiet dam in Cherang’any, Marinda dam in Kwanza and Kapretwa dam in Saboti are risk of overflowing. Nature I’d unforgiving and those who are living on riparian lands should move out before floods affect them,” he urged.

He further stated the County government has given them a motor vehicle to help in evacuation and mitigation.

Farmers counting looses

Elsewhere, some farmers in the Chepsiro ward of Cherang’any Constituency are counting losses after heavy rains washed away their crops.

Speaking to Uasin Gishu News, Chepsiro location Chief Gilbert Chepsiror urged locals to move to higher grounds.

The rains we are receiving currently have not been witnessed for a period of more than four decades. We urge people living along Moiben and Chepkaitit rivers to move to safer grounds,” Chepsiror said.

Floods used to be an annual occurrence in the Namanjalala area where River Sabwani used to break its banks.

However, this has not been the case for the last four years following the intervention of Kwanza Constituency Member of Parliament Ferdinand Wanyonyi who constructed a dyke along river Sabwani.
