Trans Nzoia Deputy Governor Philomena Kapkory has issued a strong warning to the youth against drug and substance abuse.
She said the rising trend is threatening the country’s future and undermining the potential of young leaders.
Speaking at St Marks Boys High School in Cherang’any during Mashujaa Day celebrations, Mrs Kapkory urged students to stay focused on their education and avoid destructive habits.
“Please students, don’t destroy your future by involving yourselves in drugs and substance abuse. It has ruined the lives of many bright youths in this country, and we must fight against it,” said Mrs Kapkory.

She noted that while the country was celebrating its heroes, the youth must also strive to be remembered as future heroes by making responsible choices.
In addition, the deputy governor warned that addiction not only affects health but also limits opportunities, including employment.
“When one becomes addicted, it becomes very difficult to secure a job even if you’re qualified. No employer wants to take such a risk,” she said.
Mrs Kapkory also called on security agencies and local leaders to work together in a coordinated effort to combat drug abuse, which she described as a national concern.
What’s teenage pregnancy rate in Trans Nzoia?
The Deputy Governor further raised alarm over the increasing number of teenage mothers in Trans Nzoia County, revealing that the current rate stands at 18 percent.
“This number is too high. I am speaking to both boys and girls there is urgent need for sensitization meetings across the county to promote discipline and awareness among our teens,” she said.

She encouraged students to remain committed to their studies, saying education is the surest path to a better future.
Mrs Kapkory also urged members of the public to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise, saying it is the only way to ensure citizens elect the right leaders in the 2027 General Elections.
“This is your chance to shape the future of our country. Come out in large numbers and register as voters,” she said.
