Trans Nzoia: Kapkoi Residents Demonstrate over Increase in Alcoholism, Insecurity

Residents of Kapkoi area in Keiyo ward, Kwanza Constituency, Trans Nzoia County on Monday May 12, 2025 staged a peaceful demonstration over the rise in alcoholism and insecurity.

The protest followed the Sunday May, 11, 2025 incident where Ronald Wekhombe, 45, who had sold his piece of land was murdered at a chang’aa den by Wanjala Chekonde and two other suspects who are still at large.

The attack came after the deceased was seen with a huge bundle of banknotes. He was robbed all the money by the suspects, one of who was later nabbed by locals who killed him

For the better part of Monday, charged residents demonstrated against what they termed as laxity on the part of law enforcement agencies.

The irate residents who are in a serious pursuit of the missing suspects called on security officers to do their constitutional mandate of protecting people and their properties.

Why should some few rogue characters make us uncomfortable and safe in our own country. We demand for protection from the police officers whom we pay through our taxes. Security is our right, it is not a favour or privilege,” said a resident.

Following the tension that was building up in the area, Kwanza Constituency Member of Parliament visited the residents and calmed them down.

In his emotional address, Wanyonyi condemned the killing of the local and assured the angry residents that justice will prevail.

For the avoidance of doubt, I can assure you that the culprit will face the full force of the law. As your MP, I will not sit down and see my electorates murdered by greedy and selfish individuals. Order must be restored in this area,” Wanyonyi said.

Following the double murder, security agencies led by Paul Wambugu, the County Police Commander and Kwanza Deputy Commissioner, Stephen Kavulu visited the area on Sunday evening.

In their address, the security bosses called on residents to be calm while they pursued the suspects.

They also urged them to volunteer any crucial information that can lead to the arrest of suspects.

We have heard all the issues you have raised as far as your security is concerned. I just want to assure you that you’ll see our actions,” Wambugu told the locals.
