The Uasin Gishu County Assembly has voted to set up an ad-hoc committee to handle a petition from county workers unions over their current medical insurance cover.
On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, members of various unions presented the petition outlining challenges they have faced when accessing medical services through the Trident Medical Insurance Cover.
“Noting that the matters raised in this petition are weighty, as well as of great public interest, this county assembly resolves to constitute an ad-hoc committee to investigate issues raised in the petition,” read part of the motion seen by Uasin Gishu News.

While moving the motion, the leader of the majority, Julius Sang, said the committee will be comprised of 11 members.
Which Uasin Gishu MCAs will probe Trident medical cover?
Soy Member of County Assembly (MCA) Isaac Chirchir will chair it.
Other members are;
- Rebbecca Jepchirchir
- David Keitany
- Gilbert Chepkonga
- Peter Wanjohi
- Amos Kiptanui
- Robert Kering
- Veronica Burgen
- Celestine Mutai
- Sarah Malel
- Julius Sang
The committee will have 60 days to handle the petition and report to the house.
Some of the areas that the committee is expected to find answers to are the procurement process of the insurance medical cover, challenges workers are facing using the cover, exit clauses in the agreement between the county and the insurance provider as well as mitigation measures.
“The medical insurance has given workers a raw deal. Accounts of some workers on the challenges they have been through moved some members to tears early this morning,” MCA Sang said when moving the motion.
MCAs unanimously voted to support the motion.
Earlier in the day, workers from various unions matched to the county Assembly to submit the petition.
The workers were drawn from the Kenya County Government Works Union, Kenya National Union of Nurses, Kenya Union Of Clinical Officers and Kenya National Union Of Medical Laboratory Officers.
