Farmers in Uasin Gishu are set to benefit from support aimed at reducing crop damage caused by Grey Crowned Cranes, improving livelihoods and promoting sustainable agriculture under a partnership between the County Government of Uasin Gishu and the International Crane Foundation (ICF).
The programme will provide farmers with seedlings and alternative crops that can help reduce conflicts between farming activities and crane conservation, while exploring compensation measures for farmers affected by crop damage.
Speaking while hosting the ICF team, CECM for Agriculture Dr Sam Kotut said the partnership provides an opportunity to balance crane conservation with the interests and livelihoods of farmers living around wetlands.
The ICF team, led by Eva Tokoi, together with Khadija Ibrahim and Neema Obiero, briefed the department on progress made so far and outlined plans for the next phase of collaboration.
The partnership will also support wetland restoration, environmental education and sustainable livelihood initiatives, benefiting communities that depend on wetlands and surrounding agricultural land.
The Agriculture Department reviewed progress since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding and discussed plans for next week’s stakeholder workshop, including stronger coordination with Sub-County Agricultural Officers (SCAOs) and Ward Agricultural Officers (WAOs).
Field visits are already underway, with Kesses Sub-County scheduled to host the next phase next week. The exercise will engage farmers and other stakeholders on practical conservation measures, sustainable land use and opportunities for improving household incomes.
