The total number of visitor arrivals at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Moi International Airport (MIA) rose from 169,722 persons in July 2024 to 175,113 persons in August 2024.
Notably, Moi International Airport saw a substantial increase of 25.8 per cent, growing from 15,761 persons to 19,822 persons during the same period.
A Leading Economic Indicators – August 2024 report, by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics shows that the number of embarked passengers by port of destination rose from 259,304 in May 2024 to 283,104 in June 2024. Similarly, the number of passengers who landed by port of origin rose from 257,876 to 296,807 during the same period.
Meanwhile, the total number of newly registered motor vehicles and motorcycles, categorized by body type, decreased from 13,499 units in July 2024 to 9,888 units in August 2024.
During the same period, the number of newly registered motorcycles fell from 6,060 units to 4,292 units.
The number of passengers travelling by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) rose from 168,525 in May 2024 to 186,920 in June 2024, with a corresponding increase in revenue from KSh 279.3 million to KSh 307.0 million.
Cargo volume transported via SGR dropped from 615.6 thousand tonnes to 562.4 thousand tonnes, with revenue declining from KSh 1.3 billion to KSh 1.0 billion during the same period, as presented in Table 19(d).
Revenue from MGR passenger traffic increased
Further, the Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) passenger age rose from 140,840 in May 2024 to 182,332 in June 2024.
Additionally, revenue from MGR passenger traffic increased from KSh 7.4 million to KSh 9.5 million during the same period, as presented in Table 19(e). Table 19(f) presents Mombasa Port throughput.
The volume of cargo handled decreased from 3.4 million MT in June 2024 to 3.3 million MT in July 2024 while the export volume surged by 21.4 per cent, increasing from 415.1 thousand MT in June 2024 to 504.2 thousand MT in July 2024.
However, the import volume declined from 2.5 million MT in June 2024 to 2.3 million MT in July 2024.
Trans shipment grew by 1.3 per cent from 454.3 thousand MT in June 2024 to 460.2 thousand MT in July 2024. Additionally, restows edged up slightly from 10.3 thousand MT to 10.4 thousand MT during the same period.
