Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Stephen Kihara has told locals that there is nothing to worry about as Election Day draws near.
There have been concerns amongst locals over their safety, following the emergence of threatening hate leaflets in several parts of the county.
But according to the County Security Committee chairman, everything is under control.
Speaking to the press as he flagged off a peace walk organized by Civil Society organizations in the county, Kihara said the matter of hate leaflets should not be of concern to anyone.

“The issue, is we don’t have anything to worry about. The leaders have also talked about it and condemned it. It is only that what is coming out is that people don’t know the dangers of sharing such information,” the County Commissioner told journalists.
So far, nine Moi University students accused of sharing the hate leaflets have been arrested and presented in court.
The court allowed the police to hold them for three more days, as they finalized investigations.

But even as the matter is in court, Kihara is asking locals to go on with their business without any fear.

“Those doing business or anything in this county should continue as usual,” he said.
Securing key installations in Eldoret
And with the general election day under a week away, the County Commissioner says they have already started providing security support to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for strategic electoral materials that have so far arrived.
He also said they are working on putting up strategies that will ensure key installations in the county are secured.
“Being an entry point to the North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB), we have an international airport, and it is a very critical period hence we need to allow transport flow,” Kihara said.

“We’re also putting our house in order to assist those in that will be on transit on that day, and after the elections,” he added.
The main highway used to transport cargo from Mombasa port to neighbouring East African countries passes through the county.
