The State Department for Correctional Services on Friday, June 5, 2026, marked World Environment Day with a tree planting exercise at the Eldoret Main GK Prison.
According to the Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beaco, over 2,500 trees were planted during the event that included participation from students at the Eldoret GK Prison Senior School, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), as well as officers drawn from the Kenya Prisons Service and Probation and Aftercare Service.
Speaking during the event, the PS said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts by the department to support global efforts to leverage on nature-based solutions to combat the adverse effects of climate change.

She said the department remains committed to supporting the national tree planting initiative to plant and grow 15 billion trees by 2032 to combat climate change.
The State Department has been in the forefront in environmental conservation, engaging in large-scale tree planting and seedlings production.
The department has set aside every Thursday of every month to tree planting and growing, with efforts having already resulted in planting of over 6 million trees.

A spot check by media reveal that many areas in the North Rift region has started receiving heavy rains because of planting a lot of trees that attract rains unlike in the past where the country was experiencing global warming as a result of environmental degradation .
