Uasin Gishu Senator Prof.  Margaret Kamar has supported 32 football teams from across the county with kits and assorted merchandise.

The Senator handed over the kits and merchandise in an event held in Eldoret town on Saturday.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Kamar who is also the Senate Deputy Speaker said the initiative is meant to help support, promote and nurture young talents.

At least one men’s football team from each of the 30 wards in the county benefited, alongside two female football teams.

Senator Kamar hands over some of the kits.

“This is an initiative where we want to create a positive influence in society using football. We have identified football teams of youths that we hope can have an influence on other youths positively,” noted Senator Kamar.

“Unless we create a team of youths that can influence other youths, we won’t be moving far,” she added while pointing out that over 70 percent of the Kenyan population is currently composed of the youths, with the remaining 30 percent being the elderly.

The Senator hopes to expand the program to reach out to more teams that can be impactful by influencing people from the village level.

Responding to the latest development where the World Football Governing body – FIFA announced that two key Kenyan stadia – Kasarani and Nyayo will not be hosting international football games as they were below par, Senator Kamar challenged the Ministry of Sports to work on urgently addressing the shortfalls that led to the ban.

She also expressed the need for all stadia promised by the Jubilee government are delivered.

“We must put more money into our sports facilities. The CS must pay attention to the facilities and stadia promised to Kenyans like Kipchoge Keino which has taken a long time. The government should ensure the stadia are ready, as promised,” noted Prof Kamar.

She also challenged relevant government authorities to put an emphasis on coming up with policies that will help young athletes address some of the challenges they are likely to encounter – from financial management, social and even their love-life.
