The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has revealed that at least 800 Journalism students applied to be considered for the Industrial Placement program set to be unveiled in January 2022.

MCK Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Omwoyo made the announcement on Friday, where he also revealed that successful applicants will be revealed next week.

Speaking when he joined stakeholders at the launch of the Mombasa Entrepreneurship Resource Centre for Youth (MERCY), Omwoyo also asked young people in their final year of media and communication studies to apply for the council’s Industrial Placement program.

He said the initiative will provide hundreds of media and communication students with work experience at media houses of their choice for three months and prepare them for the job market.

We have received about 880 applications from across the country. We will announce the qualified students next week to enable them to assume their places immediately,” Omwoyo said.

The MCK boss noted that students in media training institutions have for long suffered while looking for internship opportunities, with some being asked to pay for internship opportunities.

“We shall be giving them a stipend of Ksh15,000 per month just to ensure they are able to sort out their transport and other requirements and to reduce financial pressure from the media houses hosting them,” said Omwoyo.

He also encouraged the youth to visit the Media Council of Kenya’s social media platforms and website to acquaint themselves with numerous opportunities that come up.

“We want to ensure that our youth acquire the required skills and exploit opportunities at their disposal. This is their time and they should go for it,” said Government spokesperson Colonel Retired Cyrus Oguna, during the event that was also attended by Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata and regional state officials who highlighted the government’s commitment to youth employment and empowerment.
