Kwanza Member of Parliament Ferdinand Wanyonyi has called on all the contractors implementing schools infrastructure to ensure they do standard work.
Speaking when he laid foundation stone for 8 classrooms at St. Francis Kolongolo Girls Secondary School, Wanyonyi said infrastructural integrity should not be compromised.
“I am not warning you (contractors) but I am just telling you to do the right thing. We don’t want to see cracks on walls and even collapse of buildings due to sub-standard workmanship,” the MP stated.
He further urged parents to exercise caution and to only send their children to school when they are sure of their safety.
“Some children normally cross bridges everyday going to school and coming back. Parents, please if you realize the bridges are overflown, do not send your children to school, their safety comes first,” Wanyonyi said.
Schools ready for second term
Schools are set to open on Monday for the second term that was delayed for two weeks due to floods.
Meanwhile, Kwanza Deputy County Commissioner Stephen Kavulu said all the schools in the Sub County are ready to open.
However, the administrator asked parents to take education seriously.
“Education is the only equalizer and if we really have to get out of poverty, then we must play our role as parents as far as educational needs of children is concerned,” Kavulu said.
“There were some families that were hosted in Mukuyuni Primary School after they were displaced by floods. We have talked to them and they will be hosted by church,” he added.
Fr. Joseph Odongo, the school’s board of management chairperson and Elisabeth Buchichi, the principal welcomed the one storey tuition block.
“As we are speaking, we have 900 students learning in 18 classrooms including these eight. This tuition block will address congestion in our classrooms and boost our academic performance,” Buchichi said.
