The Kenya Meteorological Services Authority has forecast rainfall in more than 40 counties across the country for the week of 15th to 21st September 2026, even as most parts of the country remained dry last week.
According to the seven-day forecast released on 14th September 2026, rainfall is expected in parts of Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Embu, Garissa, Homa Bay, Kajiado, Kakamega, Kericho, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kisumu, Kitui, Kwale, Laikipia, Lamu, Machakos, Makueni, Mandera, Marsabit, Meru, Migori, Mombasa, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Siaya, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Tharaka-Nithi, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga, Wajir and West Pokot Counties.
The department’s cumulative rainfall map shows most of the expected rainfall will be in the 1-20mm range, with heavier pockets of 20-50mm in parts of the Coast, Western, Nyanza and Central regions.
At the same time, sunny intervals are expected in the afternoons in most parts of Isiolo, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana and Wajir counties.
In its weather review for 7th to 13th September 2026, KMD noted that most parts of the country were dry, with rainfall recorded in only a few counties, most notably Busia, Kisii, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale.
Which county received highest rainfall in September 2026?
The highest seven-day rainfall total of 120.7mm was recorded at the Busia Ministry of Water Office station, while Mtwapa Meteorological Station in Kilifi recorded the highest 24-hour amount of 77.1mm on 11th September.
The department also observed an upward trend in rainfall activity.
“Comparing the 31st August to 6th September 2026 and the 7th to 13th September 2026 review periods, it is noted that rainfall amounts increased in most of the stations that received rainfall,” the department said in its review.
KMSA has advised members of the public to use the forecast in conjunction with daily and five-day forecasts issued by the county directors of meteorological services.
“We urge farmers and residents in the listed counties to take advantage of the expected rains while also taking precautionary measures in areas prone to flooding, especially along the Coastal strip where heavy bursts were recorded last week,” the forecast notes.
