Locals in Eldoret town were on Monday, April 18, 2022, treated to a race incident after a swarm of bees landed on a motorbike.
The incident caused a buzz in the Eldoret town Central Business District (CBD) as the locals gathered around the motorbike to witness the unusual happening.
It remained unclear why the bees chose that particular motorbike, with the eyewitnesses saying it might have been involved in criminal activity.
“Nobody is saying whether the motorbike was stolen or not. The bees came and stuck on this bike. Even after they are chased away and the motorbike moved to another place, they still came back to the same one,” said an eyewitness.
“These are the things I have been hearing as fairytales, I never knew they would happen right in front of my face,” said another eyewitness.
The owner of the motorbike used for the bodaboda business could not be traced.
It has been believed that witch doctors use bees to track down individuals involved in the theft of household goods through burglary.
The witch doctors, allegedly in possession of some powers, are able to send the bees to a suspect after they get reports from a victim over theft of his/her property.
About a year ago, a similar incident was reported in Langas estate on the outskirts of Eldoret town where a man claimed to have stolen a TV, and a gas cylinder was attacked with bees that surrounded his arm.
It is alleged that the owner of the stolen items had sought help to recover the items from a witch doctor who performed miracles and sent bees to the alleged thief.
“…Niliwapa siku mbili kabla Jumapili, saa tano watu hao watapatikana na vitu hivyo…ilibidi nitumie nyuki ili wapate kuwavamia hao watu ambao walivichukua vifaa hivyo,” the witchdoctor said.
While some believe such occurrences are due to witchcraft, others say they are usually stage-managed by witch doctors out to make a killing on unsuspecting members of the public, desperate to get help.
