Learning was disrupted at Hill School in Eldoret on Tuesday morning after a fire razed a dormitory housing Form 3 and Form 4 students.
The inferno broke out at around 5 a.m. while learners were away from the dormitory.
No casualties were recorded, with emergency teams confirming that all 340 students accommodated in the dormitory were safe.
According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, which was among the first responders, all the learners were in class for morning preps when the fire started.
“Fortunately, all students were attending their morning preps in classrooms when the fire broke out, and no injuries have been reported,” Kenya Red Cross Society said in a statement.
The agency said the blaze was quickly managed through a multi-agency effort.
“The response is being led by the Head of Region (HOR), North Rift, together with the County Coordinator (CC), Uasin Gishu, in coordination with the Police, Fire Brigade and community members,” the statement noted.
While the fire has since been contained, the Red Cross said it has deployed a team to support the affected students and assess losses.
“KRCS is providing Psychosocial Support (PSS) to affected students and conducting a rapid needs assessment to establish the extent of damage, immediate needs and appropriate response actions,”
The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
