Interior and National Coordination Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has revealed that at least three areas in the Rift Valley region will be getting additional security services ahead of the General election.

CS Matiang’i, in a media briefing in Nakuru County on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, said the three areas have been mapped out as vulnerable to disturbance.

The three are Molo and Kuresoi in Nakuru County and Eldoret, in Uasin Gishu.

And with barely a week to the polls, Matiang’i points out that the deployment of additional security personnel in the areas has been approved by the National Security Council.

Following approval by the National Security Council for additional resources, security services will bolster deployment of personnel and equipment including aerial assets in Molo, Kuresoi, Eldoret and other areas in the country mapped out as vulnerable to disturbance,” the CS said in a tweet.

In addition to the more security personnel, the CS noted, a command centre has already been set up, and it will be used to provide quick response to the security personnel on the ground.

A multi-agency command centre has been established in Nakuru to provide 24/7 support to wananchi drawing attention to security incidents for prompt response by security services,” Matiang’i added.

Hate leaflets in Eldoret

Plans by the government to bolster security in the region come at a time there have been concerns over reports of leaflets in some of the areas in Rift Valley.

While the DP, addressing thousands of his supporters during a rally in Eldoret town on Monday, August 1, 2022, accused operatives in the Office of the President of being behind the leaflets, the powerful CS dismissed the claim.

He said already 8 suspects linked to the leaflets have been arrested.

We have 8 suspects who we suspected of sharing the leaflets and they should be taken to court, none of those people is employees of the president,” Matiang’i told Journalists in Nakuru.

We are doing a security review, especially in view of occurrences of a bit of anxiety in one or two regions of the rift valley,” he added.
