Uasin Gishu: Massive Drainage Works Underway Amid Heavy Rain

The county government of Uasin Gishu is implementing measures that had been put in place to mitigate the effects of the heavy downpour being witnessed in some parts of the North Region.

County Executive Committee Member for Roads Dr Abraham Serem says his docket is keen on opening up all drainage lines blocked to allow free flow of massive rain water in parts that have been affected to minimize destruction of various cash and food crops including road infrastructure.

The CECM who was accompanied by chief officer Geoffrey Tanui and Director Roads Eng Julius Ronoh assessed affected areas that include Jasho, Ngeria, Kapseret and Malel village in Simat/Kapseret Ward.

There is a lot of emergency work to be done because of the ongoing rains. We are keen on fulfilling Governor Bii’s vision to make sure that all roads have been damaged as a result of heavy rains is repaired,” stated Dr Serem

The CECM-led team also inspected ongoing drainage works along the AIC Mlimani Church -Kipkeino School Road where residents thanked the county government for addressing their plight.

Several areas in Uasin Gishu have reported blocked drainage system amid the ongoing heavy rains.

The county has been witnessing a heavy downpour which, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, is expected to continue for at least a week.

Which counties will experience high rainfall in August?

Uasin Gishu has been identified as one of the counties with the high potential of witnessing flash floods alongside Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, West Pokot, Turkana and Nakuru.

“Residents in the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential flash floods and poor visibility. People living downstream rivers and along seasonal rivers should be careful since water may appear suddenly even though it may not be raining within the area,” read part of the advisory.
