The County Government of Uasin Gishu, through the Department of Trade, Industrialization, Tourism, Cooperatives, and Enterprise Development, is advancing plans to expand the Kahoya market.
This initiative aims to accommodate a growing number of traders as the city is expected to host a huge population going forward.
Addressing Kahoya market traders on Thursday, September 12, 2024, during the commissioning of a market shade that will accommodate 40 traders, County Executive Committee Member Martha Cheruto reaffirmed the department’s commitment to enhancing trade.

Cheruto emphasized that improving market infrastructure, including the provision of clean water and proper drainage, remains a top priority.
What will Kahoya Market expansion focus on?
She further revealed that phase two of the expansion will include the construction of over 100 additional shades, catering to the needs of more traders.
Kahoya market currently hosts more than 600 traders, many of whom have had to endure harsh conditions, conducting their businesses under the open sky.
Huruma Ward Member of County Assembly Kimani Wanjohi, affirmed the governor’s commitment to improving the market, announcing plans to install floodlights to boost security and extend trading hours.

In addition, Wanjohi noted that the vibrancy of the market has led to increased business activity in the area, urging traders to remain in the facility even after the completion of the iconic market.
Meanwhile, Uasin Gishu Trade Chief Officer CPA Victorine Kapkiai encouraged the market committee to maintain close collaboration with the department in their ongoing efforts to uplift traders’ livelihoods.
She also promised to convene meetings with other market committees to ensure they fulfil their responsibilities.
