Eldoret Police Bust Syndicate Trading in Stolen Vehicle Spare Parts, Electronics

Police officers in Eldoret town have arrested five people suspected to be part of a syndicate involved in the theft of motor vehicles, and home burglaries.

The five were arrested within Kapsoya area on the outskirts of Eldoret town.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwathi on Wednesday told the press that detectives swung into action after receiving information over individuals’ members of the public suspected to be criminals.

We receive information about people suspected were dismantling cars and our officers acted swiftly, mobilized a team that conducted the operating,” Mwathi said.

During the operation, a Toyota Porsche vehicle was recovered that had its engine and chassis missing.

There were other parts of vehicles among them Toyota Premier and Pro box.

This means this is a syndicate that is involved in dismantling stolen vehicles are selling parts separately,” the police boss said.

A search in one of the suspects’ house also saw police officer recover 8 Television sets, laptops, 13 mobile phones and car keys as well as log books – items believed to have been stolen.

Identify recovered items

County Criminal Investigation Officer (CCIO) Daniel Muleli said an investigation to ascertain individuals behind the illegal trade is ongoing.

Muli asked members of the public that recently lost their vehicles, TVs, mobile phones or laptpts to visit Kapsoya Police post to identify the items recovered so that they can record statements and allow them to prosecute the culprits.

We’ve commenced investigations to establish those involved and we’re going to use every bit of evidence to identity vehicles and owners because this looks a big syndicate that has been operating in this area for long,” said the CCIO.

It is suspected that the syndicate has been dismantling vehicles stolen outside the county.

But as the probe continues, the police have assured residents of their commitment to deal with criminals involved in theft of vehicles and sale of stolen spare parts.
