I Will Fire You! Natembeya Warns Absentee Doctors

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natemebeya has issued a stern warning, stating his intent to terminate the employment of some senior surgeons in the county due to their prolonged absence from duty.

The governor revealed that, shockingly, one senior surgeon had not performed any surgeries over the past two years.

Speaking at Mount Elgon Hospital in Kitale during an event to unveil equipment to Community Health Promoters, Governor Natemebeya emphasized that medical professionals who neglect their duties will not be tolerated within his administration.

He said such negligence obstructs crucial service delivery.

Further, he expressed his regret over the situation where a surgeon receives a monthly salary of Ksh400,000 while dedicating most of their time to their private practices.

Now, people are dying when the doctors are there. I will make sure the doctors who are not working are not part of my government. Let people die when they are not there than dying when they are there,” the Governor said.

Praise diligent surgeons

Despite his criticism, the governor acknowledged and praised surgeons who have diligently carried out their responsibilities.

He commended one surgeon who had successfully performed 314 operations within a span of two years.

The Governor also expressed concern about the prevalent issue of high rates of early pregnancies in the region.

However, he said his government is planning to identify and support girls who have been affected by early pregnancies to help them return to school.

Governor Natembeya also pledged to enhance the welfare of Community Health Promoters, stating, “Since promoters are only allowed to work between 2-3 hours per day, my government will also prioritize giving tenders to the promoters who have formed companies to enhance self-empowerment in the community.”
