The Kenya Red Cross has issued and update on what it on Thursday night described as a mass casualty incident along the Eldoret-Webuye highway.
Reports indicated that a petroleum tanker had exposed near Paul Boit Secondary School.
It was alleged that the explosion happened as locals were syphoning fuel from the tanker.
But in an update on early on Friday, September 18, 2026, Kenya Red Cross said the incident was contained through a multi-agency response.
While there were fears of several deaths, the emergency response team said several people had been taken to hospital.
The extend of their injuries was not immediately established.
“10 casualties have been evacuated to various hospitals, facilitated by well-wishers, County ambulance services, firefighters and Kenya Red Cross,” the Kenya Red Cross said in its update on Facebook.
Most of the casualties are admitted at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital with different levels of burn injuries.
However, multiple reports indicate that two people have so far been confirmed dead following the incident.
