New MTRH Kiplombe Project Now 11% Complete, Says National Assembly Committee

The mega multi-billion shilling Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) project in Kiplombe on the outskirts of Eldoret City is now 11 per cent complete, a parliamentary oversight team has confirmed.

Led by National Assembly Health Committee Delegation Chair Julius Sunkuli, lawmakers on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, toured the 45-acre site to inspect the progress of the massive infrastructural undertaking, which is slated to cost approximately KSh 29 billion.

Speaking after inspecting the project, Sunkuli expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction, noting that the committee had independently verified the ongoing works.

“We came here to oversight the money we allocated for the project. The hospital, built on 45 acres in its first phase, will be a monumental facility and one of the most modern hospitals in the country. It will effectively relieve space and room requirements,” Sunkuli said.

The Kilgoris Member of Parliament further noted that after consultations with the contractors, the committee has urged them to accelerate construction to meet targeted completion milestones by April 2027.

He added that the parliamentary team will return in January 2027 to evaluate further progress, emphasising that the focus remains on ensuring the project is adequately funded and that the contractor stays fully committed.

Once finished, the mega-facility will boast a massive 2,000-bed capacity, alongside comprehensive inpatient infrastructure and specialised medical services.

Why new Eldoret MTRH will put Kenya on global map

According to MTRH CEO Dr Philip Kirwa, the expansive site is designed to put Kenya on the global medical map by offering cutting-edge healthcare solutions.

“In this site, we will have a 2,000-bed hospital, nuclear medicine, modern labs, and theatres, among others. It will be a modern hospital in Africa, and we expect patients from across the world,” Dr Kirwa stated.

Additionally, the MTRH boss highlighted that the master plan incorporates a dedicated research facility, Biovax integration, and partnerships with various global institutions looking to establish a footprint at the ultramodern centre. He projected that the facility will naturally spark a surge in medical tourism.

Beyond healthcare delivery, the CEO emphasized that the monumental project is poised to economically revitalize the Kiplombe area. The influx of patients, medical professionals, researchers, and visitors will drive high demand for housing, hospitality, food supply, and local commerce, effectively establishing a vibrant new commercial hub within Eldoret City.
