The Eldoret Water and Sanitation (ELDOWAS) Company Limited has issued a statement following increased complaints from a section of its customers in Eldoret town over the smell of water they have been supplying.

For several weeks now, some of the Eldowas customers have raised concerns over the quality of water they have been getting, with the main issue being the smell.

Some of the affected estates include Kimumu, Marura and Action.

In a statement by Eldowas Managing Director Peter Kibet Arap Biwot, the company admitted that some of its water has had a smell.

It attributed it to reduced water levels at Moiben Dam, one of the key water sources for the company.

The effects of climate change and degradation of the water catchment area through among others deforestation are being felt due to the delayed rainfall earlier experienced at Cherang’any Hills and its environs,” noted the Eldowas MD in the statement issued on Tuesday, July 26, 2022.

This has resulted in reduced water levels at Moiben Dam and has had an impact on the quality of our raw water. The major effect experienced so far include reduced oxygen levels in the raw water which has influenced the taste and smell,” the company added.

But despite the smell, Eldowas has assured its customers that the water from Moiben Dam is safe and fit for human consumption.

It notes that it has continued to treat the water from the dam to the required standards.

Eldowas says, the water, even though smelly is safe and fit for human consumption.

The smelly water, Eldowas notes, is however only for water from Moiben Dam.

Quality of water from all the other the other sources namely Sosiani, Kapsoya, Naiberi and Kesses are not affected by challenges experienced in Moiben Dam,” said Eldowas boss in the statement.

He also expressed optimism that the situation is expected to improve with the rainy season now at its peak.

And as long-term mitigation to the challenges being brought by climate change, Eldowas says it is implementing several climate action mitigations that include planting at least five million tree seedlings in water catchment areas.

Since May 2022, we have planted 15,000 tree seedlings,” Biwott said.
