The Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (Eldowas) is planning to roll out an athletics festival that will be staged annually within Eldoret town.
The festival, according to Eldowas Managing Director Peter Biwott, will be used to not only promote talents but also sensitize members of the public on the need to protect and utilize water.
Speaking during the finals of the Eldowas Linda Maji Football Tournament at Bishop Delany High School, Biwott said the Linda Maji Athletics Festival will be held every year, to allow locals to showcase their talents and also enjoy the race.
“We want to once in a year shut the streets in Eldoret town we do the races, festivals among others because we have a lot of champions that live amongst us. We want to educate and sensitize people on the need to use the water available to them prudently, while at the same time helping us protect this key commodity,” said the Eldowas boss.
Eldoret town prides itself in being home to tens of international athletes, and already has the Eldoret City Marathon, one of the highest paying races in Africa with over Ksh18 million total cash prizes for winners.
The creation of the Linda Maji Athletics festivals will open up more opportunities for young and upcoming athletes to make a name for themselves.
Aside from the athletics festival, Eldowas is also hoping to build on the success of the Linda Maji Football tournament, to make it an annual event.
The inaugural event attracted over 20 teams from across the Eldoret Municipality where the winning team went home with Ksh30,000, Ksh20,000 for the runners-up, while the first runners-up were awarded Ksh10,000.
All teams that participated in the race were also awarded balls.
The football tournament was part of the Linda Maji Mtaani initiative that seeks to urge members of the public to avoid misusing water, and also discourage illegal connection that accounts for a loss of over 18 million liters of water daily.
