The historic and once vibrant Kilos, famously known as Kipchinda Open-Air Market has officially reopened.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Executive Committee Member for Cooperatives and Trade Robert Kangogo presided over the reopening ceremony on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
Speaking during the event, Kangogo noted that the county government has continued to invest in market infrastructure to boost local trade and economic opportunities.
“So far, we have opened 27 open-air markets across the county. These markets are key in increasing county revenue and creating employment opportunities for our people,” he said.
When will Kipchinda Market be operating?
The reopening of Kipchinda Market is expected to strengthen trade, social interaction and attract infrastructural development among communities from our county and neighbouring West Pokot and Baringo counties.
The market will operate every Tuesday, providing a regular platform for traders and farmers to sell their produce.
Kipchinda Market Chairman Benard Cherop expressed gratitude for the reopening of the market, describing it as a historic moment for the community.
“We are proud and happy to witness history being written again with the reopening of Kipchinda Market. This milestone has been made possible by the peace and security we now enjoy along the Kerio Valley,” he said.
Tot Market was also officially opened on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
