Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Clarifies Reports His County Has 155 Bank Accounts, Spent Zero Money on Development

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich has responded to a recent report from the Controller of Budget that flagged his administration for having multiple bank accounts.

The report also listed Elgeyo Marakwet among counties that did not use a single cent of their allocation in the first quarter for development.

In a statement on his verified social media pages, Rotich denied his administration having multiple bank accounts.

He pointed out that Elgeyo Marakwet County operates only one account at the Central Bank of Kenya, where all monies received from the National government’s equitable share and county revenue are expended.

Payment of suppliers and staff is done directly from this CBK account through the IFMIS system,” the county boss noted.

Why Elgeyo Marakwet has 155 bank accounts?

However, he clarified that the said 155 bank accounts mentioned by the controller of budget belong to health facilities across the county and are run by health facility committees supervised by health management and county treasury.

The bank accounts were as a result of FIF act 2023 passed by National assembly and senate to ringfence health funds and promote efficiency at the facility level. Every health facility is audited by the auditor general as a county entity. All the facility committees are gazette,” Rotich said.

Concerning Elgeyo Marakwet spending zero money on development, the governor said in the said period, the county never received development funds “so there was no cash to expend.”

However all county projects are ongoing across the county and we assure the residents that our development agenda is on track,” he added.

Uasin Gishu and Nairobi were also listed to have used zero of their money on development.

Others are Baringo, Kajiado, Kisii, Lamu, Nyandarua, Tana River, and West Pokot.
