Elgeyo Marakwet on Tuesday played host to a United Nations (UN) event that celebrated the 23rd Anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
Governor Wisley Rotich hosted the event that was led by Gender, Culture, Arts and Heritage Principal Secretary Anne Wang’ombe and Dan Bazira, the Deputy Country Representative, UN Women.
The event, held in Iten town, also saw the official launch of the Elgeyo Marakwet County Action Plan 2020-2024 which recognises the role played by women in peace building and prevention of conflicts.

Governor Wisley underscored the role played by women in our society, especially in peace building saying their contribution was immense despite the challenges they go through.
“In our county, our women have suffered most because of violent extremism, especially in Kerio Valley because of insecurity, gender based violence, and other humanitarian disasters,” he said.
He added that some are widowed and left with the burden to single handedly raise their children when their husbands is killed in times of conflicts.

The Governor, however, said his administration had initiated actions to support women in the County through various interventions, which include training them on income generating activities beside making them peace agents.
“My administration will ensure that our women and girls have their space and protection,” he pledged.
Present were Deputy Governor Prof. Grace Cheserek, County Commissioner Mr John Korir and former Cabinet Minister Linah Kilimo, among others.
