The County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet has launched an ambitious initiative that will see the establishment of a mega seedings nursery for high-value crops.
According to Governor Wisely Rotich, the nursery will be for avocado, coffee and tea seedlings.
Rotich said the mega nursery will be established at Chebara Agricultural Training Centre.
It follows a high demand for the high value crops that has been witnessed across the county.
“Due to massive demand for seedlings towards our wealth creation program across the 20 wards, we have commenced the establishment of a mega nursery at Chebara Agricultural training centre to produce avocado,coffee and tea seedlings,” Rotich announced.
“We shall be partnering with various partners to make this a reality,” be added.
The county boss said their first target will be 6 million seedlings which will automatically make Elgeyo Marakwet County the biggest producer in the region.
He also revealed that his administration is partnering with the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) to scale up Mango Seedlings at Tot, Arror and Kimwarer nurseries.
“Youth and women are also encouraged to venture into this life changing program,” Rotich said.
He termed the initiative as practical solutions to the country and country’s economic challenges.
