The County Government of Uasin Gishu is partnering with Homa Lime, the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) and Moiben Connection to strengthen soil health, improve input efficiency and boost agricultural productivity across the county.
The initiative will initially target 100 farmers per month, translating to approximately 1,200 farmers annually. The number may be adjusted depending on KEPHIS’s capacity to undertake soil testing and the overall implementation capacity of the programme. Participating farms will also serve as demonstration and learning sites, enabling other farmers to learn and adopt appropriate soil-management practices.
Speaking during a meeting at his office, NAVCDP Coordinator Cosmas Lang’at said farmers have, over time, depleted essential soil nutrients through continuous cultivation, while contributing to increasing soil acidity.
Moiben Connection representative Antonio David and Homa Lime’s Uasin Gishu and Nandi Counties representative Dennis Lang’at said they had engaged KEPHIS on subsidised soil testing, which will help establish the condition of farmers’ soils and guide them on whether lime is required and the appropriate application rates.
Moiben Connection will facilitate farmers’ access to agricultural lime at a subsidised price of KSh500 per 50kg bag, while Homa Lime will provide the lime and technical expertise.
Farmers will benefit from training, technical guidance and follow-up, while NAVCDP agripreneurs will have opportunities to provide soil-health management and lime-application services.
