Government Releases Ksh 3 Billion to Clear NHIF Arrears for Hospitals

President William Ruto has announced the release of KSh 3 billion to clear outstanding payments owed to healthcare providers under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program.

In his Mashujaa Day address in Kwale, Ruto stated that this funding is intended to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services as the country transitions to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

The President further noted that over 12.9 million Kenyans are now enrolled in SHIF, highlighting the progress made in expanding healthcare access.

He urged private hospitals to join the UHC initiative, emphasizing the need for affordable and accessible healthcare for all citizens.

Addressing concerns about the transition from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to SHIF, President Ruto reassured Kenyans that NHIF staff would be fully integrated into the new system to maintain service continuity and quality.

Previously, the government had indicated that NHIF staff would be expected to apply afresh for their jobs.

The fund was officially replaced by the Social Health Insurance Authority on October 1, 2024.

The Mashujaa Day celebrations were attended by Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr. Deborah Barasa, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, and other top government officials.
