Financial challenges that Moi University has been facing might soon be a thing of the past.
The Kesses-based university, just like several other public learning institutions has for the last few years had financial challenges that have threatened its existence.
But during an impromptu visit to the institution on December 30, 2022, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu assured that the government will support it.
According to Kesses Member of Parliament CPA Julius Ruto who was present during the meeting, the CS affirmed that Moi University is in government’s plan.
“The university needs a lot of funding for it’s revival and am glad to note that, It is on the Ministry’s plan as assured by the CS,” CPA Ruto said.
CPA Ruto’s appeal
CS Machogu’s visit to Moi University came just days after the legislator asked President William Ruto to help address the plight of the institution.
He made the request during a Christmas Day thanksgiving service at the Eldoret Sports Club which was attended by the Head of State.
“The president listened to our plea by sending his Cabinet Secretary for Education, Ezekiel Machogu today to assess the situation of Moi University,” the MP said.
During the visit, CPA Ruto notes that the CS held a meeting with the University’s top management led by its Vice Chancellor Professor Isaac Kosgey.
He also affirmed his commitment to ensuring the institution that is within his constituency gets back to its best state.
“I intend to work closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that Moi University gets back to being a giant institution it once was,” CPA Ruto said.
Apple Farming
Financial challenges at Moi University had led to regular industrial actions by lecturers and other non academic staff, disrupting education calender.
A few years ago, the Controller of Budget had declared the university insolvent, for being unable to service its loans that run into billions.
But in a bid to address the financial troubles, the university ventured into multi-billion Apple Farming.
Moi University is one of the two public universities that have their main campuses in Uasin Gishu County alongside the Chepkoilel-based University of Eldoret (UoE).
