Uasin Gishu Governor Dr Jonathan Bii has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting sports as a platform for youth empowerment, talent development and economic opportunities.
Speaking while awarding Kitoroch FC, winners of the Ainabkoi Sub-County Governor’s Cup Football Tournament, Dr Bii said the county is keen to create more opportunities for young people to develop and showcase their sporting talents.
He noted that investment in grassroots sports plays an important role in identifying and nurturing emerging talent while encouraging young people to participate in constructive and productive activities.
The Governor said the Governor’s Cup has provided an avenue for upcoming footballers to showcase their abilities, gain competitive experience and engage with their communities through sport.
Kitoroch FC received Ksh 500,000 after emerging as winners of the Sub-County championship. Kipsinende finished second and received Ksh250,000, while Chepkero and Kipkorgot took home Ksh100,000 and Ksh50,000 respectively after finishing third and fourth.
Dr Bii said his administration would continue to support initiatives aimed at widening sporting opportunities across the county and helping young people explore ways of turning their talents into sustainable livelihoods. Kaptagat Ward MCA Jonathan Ng’etich described sports as an important avenue for youth empowerment and community engagement.
County Executive Committee Member for Sports Robert Kemei outlined various programmes being implemented by his department, guided by the Governor’s fifth pillar of the Nguzo Kumi agenda.
Trade County Executive Dr Philip Chebunet also commended the tournament for providing young people with an opportunity to participate in competitive football and showcase their abilities.
Chief Officers CPA Victorine Kapkiai (Sports) and Nixon Cheplong (Economic Planning), together with other county directors, attended the award ceremony.
