The national government is not doing enough to address the challenges facing farmers, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has said.
Natembeya on Monday, March 2, 2026, said the national government should allocate more funds for ploughing farmers’ land and provide free fertiliser for planting.
The governor spoke at Chebarus area in Cherangany Sub-County during a free seed distribution exercise.

He said that three years after the introduction of the free seed programme, the food situation has greatly improved in the county.
“The number of people visiting my office to seek food assistance has reduced. I am optimistic this programme will eliminate food shortages and completely lock hunger out of my county,” said Natembeya.
The county boss has been moving across the country to distribute free maize seeds to small scale farmers as the planting season sets in.
Ksh 139 million has been set aside for the programme targeting over 230,000 farmers.
Under the programme, each smallholder farmer is given a 2kg packet of maize seed free of charge.

During the distribution of the seeds at Chebarus area, the governor was accompanied by area MCA Simon Murei, Matisi MCA Obed Mwale, Agriculture County Executive Committee (CEC) member Phanice Khatundi, and her Trade counterpart Patrick Gacheru.
Others CEC members present were Kerio Lorot, Gideon Barongo, Pius Gumo, and Chief Officers Joseph Wasike and Sammy Sichangi.
