Inside Kapsabet Town’s Reorganization Plan to Optimize Land Use and Facilitate Future Expansion

/

Following the approval of the Kapsabet Municipality Master Plan by the Nandi County Assembly, significant changes are set to reshape Kapsabet Town for optimal land use and future expansion.

The plan, aimed at addressing the rapid growth of Kapsabet Municipality, outlines strategic initiatives to densify existing urban spaces and expand into surrounding areas. This approach seeks to accommodate population growth, attract investments, and provide the infrastructure needed for major events, ensuring the town’s continued vibrancy.

To facilitate Kapsabet’s growth, attract investors, and create a conducive environment for businesses and residents, a series of strategic relocations and developments have been proposed.

These actions are designed to transform Kapsabet into an attractive destination for all.

Kapsabet market to be relocated to Kipchoge Keino Stadium land

The first major proposed change involves relocating the Kapsabet market from its current constrained 2-acre site to the 8.7-acre Kipchoge Keino Stadium land. The existing market, which serves about 600 traders in suboptimal conditions, will be moved to a new, modern complex that can accommodate over 5,000 traders. The County Government has allocated Ksh. 350 million for this project, which will include modern amenities, proper sanitation, lighting, and security. The existing facilities at the stadium, such as perimeter walls and toilets, will help reduce costs and enhance the new market, which will feature rooftop restaurants and other modern features.

Kapsabet’s Kipchoge Stadium to be moved

As part of the county’s long-term vision, Kipchoge Stadium will be relocated to the 25-acre Showground, enabling the development of a modern 15,000-capacity stadium with an indoor arena.

Supported by a Ksh. 1.5 billion allocation under the Talanta Hela initiative, the new stadium will serve as a hub for local sports and a key venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with Nandi and Uasin Gishu counties designated as training grounds.

This relocation is supported by a 1.5 billion shilling allocation under the Talanta Hela initiative,” the statement read.

Conversion of Market Site into Matatu Stage/Bus Park

The current market site will be converted into a dedicated Matatu terminus and bus park. This new facility will address the overcrowding and logistical challenges faced by the existing Matatu stage, providing a safer, more organized space for Matatu services. The new terminus will enhance accessibility and safety for passengers and operators, with weatherproof infrastructure to protect against the elements. “The new terminus will be a centralized hub, ensuring better accessibility and enhanced safety for passengers and operators,” the statement mentioned.

Relocation of ASK Showground to Kaimosi Agricultural Training College (ATC)

The ASK Showground has been proposed to be moved to Kaimosi ATC, which boasts over 300 acres of land ideal for regional agricultural hubs. The new location will offer facilities for specialized training centres, conference halls, and model farms, fostering agricultural innovation. This move will provide a permanent, accessible venue for agricultural events and demonstrations, supporting the sector’s growth.

Affordable Housing Development on Showground Land

To address the growing demand for residential infrastructure, the County Government plans to develop 10,000 affordable housing units, with 220 units already under construction and 1,200 more set to be launched soon. Sixteen acres of the Showground land will be utilized for this development, aligning with the county’s broader housing strategy. These units will also serve as accommodation for athletes and officials during the 2027 AFCON.

The proposed developments, aligned with the newly approved Kapsabet Municipality Master Plan, further aim to transform Kapsabet into a progressive, attractive, organized, and sustainable urban centre.

By addressing current needs and planning for future growth, these initiatives will also enhance the town’s resilience and position it as a thriving, accessible, and livable destination.
